Almost everyone unconditionally adores strawberries, but not everyone knows how different its varieties are. They differ in taste and ripening time, and some can even be harvested twice a year. In order not to confuse you, we have prepared a selection of the best varieties of strawberries with photos and descriptions of the best of them!
Early varieties of strawberries
They give their first long-awaited harvest at the end of spring. This strawberry appears first, but its taste is in no way inferior to the late one. Some hybrids even noticeably outperform other varieties.
Marshmallow
The Danish variety grows into tall bushes with large leaves and powerful peduncles. The fruits are rather dark, ripen at the same time and tolerate transportation well.
But these strawberries are very sensitive to frost. In winter, the strawberry Marshmallow definitely needs shelter, because without snow it will most likely die. At the same time, the berries are easily frozen and do not lose their shape and taste.
Clery
The Italian variety is surprisingly resistant to heat and extreme temperature changes, so it thrives in the south. Clery strawberries are resistant to most diseases and produce a stable, very sweet and flavorful crop.
The berries are tapered, but may be slightly irregular. But they are practically the same size, very sweet and with an expressive aroma.
Elsanta
Greenhouse Dutch strawberries will not survive outdoors, but will give a luxurious early harvest in a greenhouse. The berries are very large, with a fresh and light sweet and sour taste.
Elsanth is difficult to reproduce on its own, because it has few rosettes and antennae. But all the difficulties are compensated by very appetizing large berries ripening literally before our eyes.
Alba
The young variety has already rapidly gained popularity all over the world. And all because it is very hardy and gives large berries with a rich taste. The alba is easy to breed and has many mustaches and rosettes, but does not tolerate drought.
Alba bushes are medium in size, so they don't take up too much space. Large leaves provide the necessary partial shade and protect the berries from heat and sun.
Kimberly
Another Dutch variety is distinguished by an unusual shape of berries that resemble a heart. Although the strawberries are relatively small, only up to 20 g, they have a very bright caramel flavor.
The bushes themselves are compact, poorly covered with tendrils, so that they can be planted quite densely. And they are densely covered with leaves that protect the berry from heat and external influences.
Late strawberry varieties
Late strawberries take over when the early varieties have finished bearing fruit. Some species give a harvest until autumn, which means that all this time there will be fresh and fragrant berries on the table!
Bohemia
The young variety has already gained tremendous popularity due to its high yield and large fragrant berries. The fruits are quite dark and glossy, and the bushes thrive in the south and north.
Bohemia ripens by mid-June and gives a bountiful harvest of medium-sized berries - about 50 g. It is completely insensitive to weather changes, rain, dampness and fungal diseases.
Pegasus
Pegasus strawberries are very good: smooth, neat, perfectly regular shape, with a delicate sweet and sour taste. The variety is resistant to late blight, wilting, strawberry mites and other common problems.
The main disadvantage of Pegasus is the susceptibility of the variety to lesions by powdery mildew, therefore, preventive treatments cannot be dispensed with. During transportation, dense berries almost do not crumple, do not deteriorate and do not release juice.
Great Britain
It is appreciated for its large berries and fantastic resistance to disease and frost. Bushes grow short, but very powerful. The berries have an unusual cherry hue and a slightly sour taste with dense flesh.
Great Britain gives up to 2 kg per bush, and the size of each berry can reach 120 g. Although more modest berries are still found - about 90 g. Consider that their properties and taste suffer greatly from heat and lack of moisture.
Charlotte
Charlotte is appreciated for the incredible taste and delicate aroma of the berries, despite the fact that the harvest is not very rich. But in order for these properties to unfold in all their glory, it is important to wait until full maturation.
Strawberry fruits are not too large - about 30 g, and an average of 0.7 kg can be harvested from a bush. But the variety is resistant to pests and rarely gets sick. And with proper care, berries have an interesting strawberry aftertaste.
Malvina
The German variety is valued for its resistance to dampness and prolonged rains, because strawberries have excellent immunity to fungus and rotting. The harvest is not very large, but the berries are sweet, with a rich taste and are unpretentious during transportation.
On hot days, Malvina must be watered abundantly, because it is a moisture-loving variety. His yield is average - up to 0.9 kg per bush, and the size of the fruits themselves is about 40 g.
Repairing strawberry varieties
The advantage of these varieties is the increased yield. Therefore, with proper care for the season, the berry can even be obtained twice. These are breeding hybrids, resistant to adverse conditions and extremely unpretentious.
Albion
This rather old American variety is notable for its very large berries and the same large leaves on the bushes. This strawberry is very aromatic, and up to 2 kg of yield can be obtained from one stem.
Albion begins to bear fruit at the beginning of summer and ends by its end. Subject to agricultural technology, as many as three crops can be harvested per season, but it is difficult to grow such strawberries in the middle lane.
Vima Rina
The Dutch variety is notable for its powerful, spreading shrubs with large leaves that protect against overheating. The berries are large and juicy, sweet and sour with tender pulp.
It is a good choice for southern regions because it is almost impossible to overheat such strawberries. But because of this, it has a rather low winter hardiness. But the berries tolerate long-term transportation well.
Temptation
The English hybrid is also easy to distinguish by the shape of the bushes - they have very long peduncles. This is an early and large-fruited variety, and up to 3 kg of berries are obtained from one bush. On the palate, expressive but delicate musky notes are clearly traced.
The first crop can be harvested at the end of spring, and the last one - before the autumn frosts. The bushes have a very powerful root system, so they are insensitive to external stimuli.
Elizabeth
It is one of the largest strawberry varieties with powerful tendrils and undulating blooms. The first harvest can be obtained in May, and the last in September. Fragrant berries grow up to 45 g and are distinguished by a delicate dessert taste.
Elizaveta is not the most winter-hardy and durable variety, and after a couple of years the berries on the plantation will begin to shrink. But the bushes are almost insensitive to powdery mildew and all kinds of rot.
Garland
This is a fragrant domestic variety that is suitable for the conditions of the Central regions. Spherical bushes with pinkish lashes look very interesting on their own.
The berries are bright, shiny, aromatic and juicy, and the harvest begins in early June. Among the shortcomings - sensitivity to fungal diseases and exactingness to agricultural technology.
Large-fruited strawberry varieties
From the name it is easy to guess that these are varieties combined by the size of the fruit. They may have different ripening times, but each berry stably grows to 100 g or more.
Gigantella
The Dutch variety is so large and tall that a maximum of four bushes coexist on one square. For strawberries to grow large, they need a lot of sun and intense watering.
Gigantella belongs to mid-season varieties, and it is quite problematic to harvest twice. But large and bright berries of the first harvest can weigh 125 g. Moreover, even frost and rainy days do not affect their taste in any way.
Mashenka
This is the most popular domestic large-fruited variety with giant berries. The hybrid is resistant to most diseases and fungi, but does not survive drought and too hot days.
Masha is the same strawberry that can easily weigh 100 g or more. At the same time, the bushes are not too large, and the antennae grow in huge numbers and take root well.
Marshal
It is one of the oldest varieties popular today. Marshall strawberries were bred at the end of the nineteenth century, and they have survived to this day thanks to their amazing resistance to fungi and temperature extremes.
Strawberries have a very strong and strong root system, so they can easily tolerate mild droughts. The fruit has an interesting triangular shape, and a pronounced sourness is read in the taste.
Maxim
Among large-fruited varieties, Maxim is best suited for freezing and processing. Bushes grow very intensively, with thick stems and stalks.
Some argue that the taste of Maxim strawberry slightly resembles sweet tomatoes. Irregularly shaped berries are regularly found, but this does not affect their quality in any way.
Zenga Zengana
The popular late hybrid is very hardy, but does not tolerate heat and southern climates. The fruits are not only large, but also fragrant, therefore, compulsory treatment from pests is needed.
When breeding a hybrid, another popular variety was used - Sieger. And the breeders managed to preserve its best features, so that the berries grow strong and resilient.
