Soft and cozy ottomans are great in the hallway, at the dressing table in the bedroom, or around the fluffy carpet in the living room. They will come in handy in the nursery, in the kitchen, in the bathroom - literally everywhere. But finding the perfect pouf is always difficult - there are too many of them, and everything is not right. So why not do it yourself? Let's tell you how!
1. An ottoman made of boards
If you confidently work with wood and chipboard, you can make a real furniture masterpiece. You will need 4 rectangular sheets of chipboard 40x30 cm, a circle with a diameter of 30 cm and 4 small wooden blocks of 4-5 cm. This is the most durable option from everything that can be made from scrap materials.
From rectangular chipboard sheets, assemble a box with self-tapping screws and reinforce it with metal corners. From below, glue or screw on the bars, on which you will then put the furniture wheels. Put a circle on top, glue and cover the entire structure with foam rubber. All that remains is to put the ottoman in a cover and decorate it with frills or flounces.
2. Chipboard ottoman in the form of a cube
Another version of a chipboard ottoman, only this time for a completely square cube. You need 5 sheets of chipboard 40-40 cm in size, which you will roll into a box in the same way and secure with metal corners. From the bottom, screw the legs from short thick bars.
If you make the bottom in the box, and cut out the lid a little more and put it on the hinges, you get a pouf with a convertible top. It is convenient to store some household items, bedding accessories, household chemicals or shoe brushes in it. In this case, the box itself and the top cover are covered with foam rubber and upholstery separately from each other.
3. Knitted ottoman
To make this beautiful ottoman with your own hands, you will need thick voluminous threads and the thickest knitting needles. It is not necessary to knit complex patterns - an ordinary scarf is enough. For the simplest option, a long knitted strip with dimensions of about 0.5x1 m is enough.
Connect the strip along the side seam with a needle or crochet and pull off the top with the warp thread. Then pull the bottom in the same way, leaving a little space for stuffing - you will close this hole later. As a filler, take pieces of foam rubber, washcloth filler or synthetic winterizer.
4. Tire ottoman
You can use an old car tire and make a big ottoman out of it for your home. In addition to it, you will need two more circles of chipboard or plywood with a diameter slightly smaller than the tire. They need to be screwed on top and bottom with screws or bolts.
Cover the ottoman with foam rubber on all sides so that it is completely soft. You can wrap it with a thick sisal rope in a spiral from the center, thus making also a scratching post for your pet. Thick, short bars make excellent legs or a base for furniture wheels.
5. Soft pouf in the form of a cube
By and large, this is a voluminous thick pillow, so you need to sew it accordingly. Any thick fabric or even a textile rug is suitable for the cover, and a simple burlap for the lining.
Take a decorative rectangular pillow and cut the top piece of the ottoman according to its dimensions. And then in the same way - 4 rectangular side ones. Cut another square piece out of burlap for the bottom, and then connect all the elements with pins and sew from the wrong side, except for one side.
Unscrew the pouf and place several pillows in the appropriate size. You can insert one, and fill the remaining space from the bottom with any other filler. Pillows can be easily replaced with square sheets of foam rubber in such quantity that they are enough for the entire thickness of the ottoman.
6. Ottoman made of plastic bottles
If recycling, ecology and waste sorting are your concerns, you will love the plastic bottle ottoman. In order not to put them in the trash, the bottles can be thoroughly washed and given a second life.
You will need about 40 even, clean and dry 1.5-2 liter bottles, cardboard, foam rubber and a cloth for wrapping. To create a neat round ottoman, start aligning the bottles from the center and around the radii. Connect them together with a glue gun or ordinary tape.
Cut out two circles according to the size of the blank for the top and for the bottom from thick packaging cardboard or an old box. To make it tighter, make two by two, and then glue them in place. Cut out a piece of foam: two circles and a long rectangle to wrap the side. Shared the blank with foam rubber on all sides and cover it with upholstery fabric - the ottoman is ready.
7. Pouf bag
The ottoman-bag consists of an inner part with a filling and an outer decorative cover with a zipper. Small balls of expanded polystyrene are placed inside - it takes any shape well and is completely harmless.
For the inner cover, take a strong fabric that must be breathable. Even old cotton bedding will do. Choose an outdoor one for your interior, but do not forget about practicality: it should be easy to wash, not get too dirty, not tear or fade.
The classic shape is a pear or a pancake, but you can experiment and make, for example, a pouf in the form of a soccer ball. It is more convenient to fill the filler through a paper funnel so that it does not scatter throughout the room. If you want, the inner cover can be sewn up tightly, but then it will not work to wash it or replace the filler.
8. Ornamented ottoman
The main feature of such a ottoman is a beautiful ornament, for which you first need to find and make a stencil. Pick it up for some other interior accents: textiles, a colored wall, decoration motifs or a wall panel. You can later decorate decorative pillows or make paintings with the same pattern.
Cut out two circles from thick fabric and a long rectangle for the side. Its length corresponds to the circumference, and its width corresponds to the height of the ottoman you want to receive. Transfer the pattern from the stencils with acrylic paints using brushes and a sponge. Sew all the details, zigzag the seams, add a zipper if desired, turn out and fill the product.
